The NHS clams that missed appointments alone cost it around £700m per annum. A system that reminds patients of their appointments by SMS the week and the day beforehand and, importantly, asks them to text back a 'Yes' or 'No' regarding their intention to attend will solve a large proportion of this problem.

Similarly, huge costs are incurred as a result of patients failing to adhere to their prescription regimens. This can include failure to take their drugs at the correct times and intervals or failure to collect repeat prescriptions. Again, simple SMS reminders, sometimes with the option to respond, can greatly reduce these problems and their associated costs.

This methodology has been extended in to the field of managing subjects through clinical trials, where recruitment and retention is a major cost and potential problem in managing trials to a successful conclusion.
